Official's Response
I am also concerned by torture in all its forms and would like to see an end to torture everywhere in the world.
For an up-to-date summary of the Government's position on torture I wrote to the Foreign Secretary, William Hague, for his comments on the matter. I have received a response from Alistair Burt MP, the Minister responsible for counter terrorism issues. His comments are recorded below.
Best Wishes
Roberta Blackman-Woods MP
"The Government takes allegations of UK complicity in mistreatment extremely seriously. As we have made clear in the Programme for government we will never condone the use of torture. Addressing these allegations and the wider range of detainee issues is a government priority and Ministers are discussing these matters in the National Security Council. These are important questions on which we will make announcements soon."
